I’ve gotten bit by the genealogy bug again. It’s happened many times over the last 20 years. I’ve compiled a lot of information on my ancestors.
A commenter sent me a link to look up the ship my grandfather was supposed to be a captain of and I went to the site and found a list of captains for that ship. His name wasn’t on it but his cousin J. E. Blake was listed. So my mother was told right… maybe. My cousin has a picture of the ship and handwritten on it is “Captain” Ezra A. Lake…. so who knows what is right. That’s the trouble with genealogy sometimes. Names, dates, locations etc. can get muddled and mixed up throughout the years.
I hate to have to sign up and pay at some of the genealogy sites, but it looks like if I want more information on my ancestors I may have to do that. There are some free sites, but they don’t have a lot of information that you can get for free. I’m still trying to find out when my mom’s brother died (she doesn’t remember exactly when) and I can’t find it on the social security site (I have found other’s there, just not my uncle).

Tracking your family tree can be both interesting and daunting! Especially if part of it decided to disappear at some point
Good luck with your search — I’ve heard that there are some vast files in Salt Lake City.

Maggie’s last blog post..Word Press Themes and Plugins – Which are Your Favorites?
Maggie: Yes.. it can be. I use a program called Legacy.. it’s free and I make backups of everything constantly. Plus I have it all up on RootsWeb.
cerativestrokes: Thank you.
My husband worked on his family geneology for a while. It was really interesting, especially when he discovered that he had a distant cousin living just minutes away from us! We wound up meeting the guy for lunch several times and it was fascinating to find the similarities in our immediate families.
Lynne: That’s great!
Oh Lord! You need to talk to my wife. She is the genealogy queen!! I call her a “ghost hunter”. lol She gets most of her scoops from archives, and then follows that up at churches, schools, etc. I guess it is neat.
George: I could probably give her a run for the money. I just found a whole lot of missing links today. lol
My father is a major genealogist? He was making some headway a few years ago, and then all of a sudden hit a wall and was unable to find any more relatives. He waited a few years and now he is making some major breakthroughs in our genealogy. So.. If you ever get stuck… don’t give up. New technologies and other people’s genealogical findings will help you out!
David: I take a break when I’ve found all I can. Then I come back later on and I find more
We should never forget that our future is made up of our past
i too have found family history to be exciting but when it comes to name changes I can’t even get a straight answer from the “old man”….it used to be Drezerwicki or something like that and now its DONOVIN…
note the i instead of the a in donovin…its the polish spelling….LOL…
i think they came thru ellis Island and got the old “your name is what? NO NO NO…now its donovin -go to that line over there…”
I am either Irish or Polish depending on how it works best for me that day!!
thnx
