I just got a certified letter in the mail from our real estate agent telling me the landlord is not going to renew or extend our lease. We have to be out by the end of the month. I don’t know what I’m going to do!! I haven’t told hubby yet… he’s at work and I don’t want to upset him there.
This sucks… this sucks.. this sucks…..

The end of the month, as in less than a week from now? That CAN’T be legal, I thought you had to be given AT LEAST 30 days notice if they want you to move. I’m not sure what the laws are in NJ, but here in MA, it’s a battle to evict even those who’ve not paid their rent for months on end!
I would definitely call and question this. Look online for the laws, call whoever does landlord/tenant stuff in NJ. This could help buy you some more time, at the least.
I agree. This SUCKS. I wish you the best of luck.

You’re exactly right, 30 days MUST be given and if you have children, I believe the time frame is longer.
I wish you all the best figuring this out. I’d check out rentlaw and see what your recourse is, since this is definitely not fair.

If there is a signed lease be sure to read it all the way through. 30 days notice is a legally binding clause in most rental agreements. They cannot call you with only a week left in the month and tell you to get out. Here is some info on Tenant’s rights in NJ

I’m like 99% positive that they cannot force you to move out in 2 weeks if you had a monthly or yearly lease.
They have to give you 30 days notice just like you would have to give them 30 days notice if you were planning on moving.
You need to call your area’s housing authority and ask about renter’s rights.
Tell them what kind of lease you had, monthly or yearly, that your rent is paid, always has been, but they are giving you just 2 weeks to move out.
I am really positive that they cannot do this, it’s against the law in like every state practically.
Seriously, Charlotte, get on the phone with your local housing authority immediately, call the city hall, call anybody and everybody in city and local government and ask them what rights you have based on the type of lease you had, and fight this.
2 weeks is NOT enough time to find a place, pack, and move.
What they are doing isn’t legal, but most tenants don’t know the laws, they don’t know renter’s rights, so the landlord gets away with doing this to people.
Fight this Charlotte, fight for your legal 30 day right to notice.
