25 Aug 2011 Disasters abounding

The other day we felt the earth shaking under our feet and found out there had been an earthquake centered in Virginia. That was the first earthquake I ever felt. I was sitting on the couch and it felt like someone was shaking the couch. Then the door rattled and I knew something was going on. Within 15 minutes of the shaking the news broke into the show I was watching to report the earthquake.

The next thing in our future is a hurricane. Hurricane Irene is due to hit us Saturday into Sunday and it could be a category 2. The run on the grocery stores started yesterday and we will be going to TRY to find some things we need tomorrow. We would go today except that payday isn’t until tomorrow. We need candles, batteries, water and some food that doesn’t need to be cooked.

The press is forecasting that there could be multi-day electric outages, really bad winds, rain and flooding. The last bad one we had was back in the 1980′s… Gloria. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that everyone stays safe and we come through this without a lot of damage.

07 Mar 2011 Flooding everywhere…

Yesterday it started raining. It rained all afternoon and into the night. We got a lot of rain but we were lucky because we didn’t get as much rain as some inland sections got. There was a lot of flooding in Pennsylvania, which is about 50 miles west of us.

I was watching the weather and saw the satellite weather view which showed very heavy rain and some severe thunderstorms embedded in. All of this was just west of us. We did get heavy rain and wind.

Down in Louisiana they had tornadoes that did a lot of damage. I’m just so glad I don’t live anywhere near tornado alley. Sometimes I watch the storm chaser shows and seeing the tornadoes they catch on camera just scares me to death. The destruction tornadoes cause is devastating.

I was watching the news and they were showing people driving through flooded streets. I don’t know why people think they are invincible and can make it through deep water. Their cars die and get flooded and they are trapped in flood waters until someone can come and rescue them.. if they are lucky enough to have someone get to them in time. A lot of people die in floods and that is really sad.

I hope I never have to deal with a flood any time soon.

10 Jan 2011 Here it comes again!

The day after Christmas we got 20 inches of snow. Saturday we got another 7.7 inches of snow. Tomorrow we are supposed to get ANOTHER 4 to 8 inches of snow.

I just want winter to be over with already. After all the snow we got last year I am so done with that white stuff. I don’t want to see any more of it. The weather people lied. They said that this year wouldn’t be as bad as last year. I don’t know where they got their information from but it was wrong! It’s been colder than last year was and we’ve had more snow than we had at this time last year.

At least this year I have a snow shovel so I can dig out the car when the landscapers come along and plow the parking lot and bury my car. At least the last two storms the snow was light and fluffy. This next storm is supposed to heavier and I won’t be able to shovel it because I have a bad back and have had 2 back surgeries.

I’m really not looking forward to Tuesday into Wednesday…. not one little bit.

07 Sep 2010 It’s getting to be that time of year

Fall is almost upon us and it’s about that time to start getting halloween costumes for the kids. Andi already has a couple things together for the boys, they want to be the Blues Brothers. She’s still looking for something for Benton and Tayler doesn’t know if she wants to dress up or not.. she’s 14 now.

I miss my old job setting up utilities for the Halloween stores. Halloween has been one of my favorite holidays…. next to Christmas (my all time favorite holiday). I miss all of the people I worked with and the way the office would get decorated with things the company sells.

This summer has been so hot, dry (rain-wise) and humid. It’s been horrible. I can’t wait for the cool, crisp fall weather (we’ve had a little taste of that the past few days). Today the heat and humidity came back and the A/C came back on. I haven’t seen such weather extremes in a long time. This past winter was cold and snowy.

I hope mother nature gets her act together and gets the weather back into normal mode again.

08 Jul 2010 Just fix it

Mother nature must need to change her humidifier filters or turn it off completely because the humidity is horrible hear. It’s especially bad today because we had rain this morning and that just added to the moisture already in the air.

The heat wasn’t quite as bad today, it was below 100, but the humidity makes it feel hotter than what it really is.

They say the humidity makes your hair uncontrollable but that’s not the case for me. It doesn’t do a thing to my hair, it’s too thin. I wish my hair would curl in the humidity then maybe it would look thicker. But no… my hair is poker straight along with be so thin you can see my scalp through it.

04 Jul 2010 It’s gone…

…… the gorgeous weather I posted about in the previous post.. that is. Today was in the middle 90′s and the humidity is starting to creep back in.. YUK!! The temperatures are just going to get higher and higher for at least the next week and will end up in the 100′s. The humidity is going to be getting higher too.

Weather like this can make cars overheat and end up on the side of the road awaiting roadside assistance especially if they are sitting in traffic. The traffic will be bad, well it already has been bad since it’s the Fourth of July weekend.

I’m just glad we aren’t doing any traveling this weekend. We are staying at home and having a quiet holiday.

15 Mar 2010 Bad mood

It’s not me that’s been in a bad mood.. Mother nature threw one hell of a hissy fit this past weekend. We had a hell of a Nor’easter again this weekend. We had one gust of wind that had to have been close to hurricane force. Luckily it hit the camper from the front and not the side. If it had hit from the side we might have gone tumbling across the yard and that wouldn’t have been good. As it was the camper rocked and rolled with that gust. It was downright scary.

A lot of people lost their electric but we were lucky and didn’t lose ours. A lot of trees came down in the area too. Yesterday morning we had a hellacious thunderstorm that scared poor JoJo half to death. Yesterday afternoon I went to go to Shoprite and couldn’t get up Second Ave because a tree was down across the road. I had to turn around and go a different way. I saw at least 3 or 4 trees down during my 5 minute trip.

We’ve had so much rain that there is flooding everywhere. We went past the local baseball/football fields and there is no way anyone could play any sports there right now. It looked like a big pond.

Now I have to get my stuff together and go do laundry. I was going to do it yesterday but Andi and Drew invited me to go to the Berlin Farmer’s Market with them and it was good to get out of the house and do something other than sit here or do laundry.
